Barry Boehm's career in computing and software coincided with the early evolution, definition and expansion of the discipline of computer programming in the 60's. His background in mathematics (primary, masters and Ph.D.) predisposed him, through his early programming experiences, to the need to attain algorithmic correctness, however his subsequent exposure to the production of relatively large programs, diverse programming languages, diverging computer architectures, human interface and usability considerations drew him to conceptualize of the general experience of programming as a highly subjective exercise in group communication.
